Receptionist commits suicide after prank by 2dayFM Djs – Internet responds
One of the best ways to get publicity and to promote your brand is using social media, stuff like Facebook and Twitter for instance. If used correctly it can be a great way to build your brand. But sometimes it can go horribly, horribly wrong.
A couple of days ago, some DJs at Australian Radio Station 2DayFM decided it would be a jolly jape to call up the hospital where Kate was suffering morning sickness and pretend to be the Queen. Happens all the time I guess, we've all heard prank calls on the radio but this one, even though targeted at some pretty tough people (the royals, they're used it) caused collateral damage – the nurse that took the call has committed suicide.
This is where having a public profile in Facebook and Twitter suddenly becomes a big downside.
Their Facebook page has been literally hammered with negative comments, Twitter is in rage about the DJs (causing one to close his account) and so it looks like they've now got enough bad publicity to probably end in a sacking or two. Their website is currently crashing due to visits and the media is calling for the presenter's heads.
If you're on the Internet, beware. If one of your pranks ends up in leaving two children without a mother, the Internet will have its revenge, and how.
